Cyber Attacks

How a cyber attack could cripple the electrical grid.

Potentially tens of millions of people without electricity for months at a time.

Are we prepared for a Cyber Pandemic?

Covid-19 has demonstrated the destructive potential of biological viruses, but a cyber attack would spread faster and further.

It would have a similar, devastating economic impact, the recovery would be challenging, and could take months.

The threat is already here.

In 2016, Ukraine’s capital city of Kiev unexpectedly lost all power.

This cyberattack was caused by malware known as Industroyer, which is “specifically designed to attack the power grid.”

The Council on Foreign Relations reports, “Rapid digitization combined with low levels of investment in cybersecurity and a weak regulatory regime suggest that the U.S. power system is as vulnerable—if not more vulnerable—to a cyberattack as systems in other parts of the world.”
